Out of the eight national parks in Croatia, this one receives the most visitors and is one of the most distinguished. In 1979 it was among the first in the world to be registered in the World Heritage List (UNESCO). The wealth of the Plitvice Lakes is based on its tufa-generating waterfalls, its world-renowned sixteen cascading lakes, the multitude of geomorphological forms, forest and meadow habitats, plant and animal life, cultural heritage and the tourism amenities in this largest and oldest Croatian national park.
